Risk warning: Trading forex, futures and crypto carries a high risk of loss and is not suitable for every investor. Leverage can work against you as fast as it works for you. Only trade money you can afford to lose.
Crypto bots come in three kinds: bots built into an exchange, cloud services that trade your exchange account through an API key, and software you run on your own machine. We compared nine on who holds your coins, what the key can do, what each trade costs and whether you can use it in the US.
We may earn a commission when you join a provider through links on this page. It never changes the ranking. How we make money
A crypto exchange with grid, DCA, rebalancing and other bots built in, so there is no API key to hand to a third party. The global site charges 0.05% per spot trade and 0.02% maker or 0.05% taker on futures, with no bot subscription. Its terms exclude US residents; US users get a separate platform run by Pionex Inc., a licensed money transmitter that was fined $20,000 by North Carolina and Ohio in 2025 for operating there before it was licensed.

Grid, DCA, martingale and arbitrage bots
Every platform here sells the same few strategies under different names. What matters is the market each one needs and how it fails.
Martingale bots add a larger order each time price moves against you, so a long trend can use up the whole balance. On futures this is combined with leverage; Bybit's martingale bot allows up to 50x. Arbitrage bots look for price gaps, most often between spot and perpetual futures funding rates. The gaps are small, so fees decide whether they pay.
Makes money when
Loses when
Spot grid
Price moves up and down inside your range
Price leaves the range; below it you hold coins bought on the way down
Futures grid
Same as spot, with leverage
A trend reaches the liquidation price
DCA
Price recovers after you buy in steps
Price keeps falling and the safety orders run out
Martingale
One bounce recovers earlier losses
A long move against you uses up the balance or triggers liquidation
Funding arbitrage
Funding rates stay positive
Rates flip, or fees and price gaps eat the spread
Exchange bots, cloud bots and self-hosted bots
Exchange bots from Pionex, Binance and Bybit run inside the exchange. There is no API key to leak and no subscription, but the bot only trades on that exchange and your coins sit there the whole time.
Cloud bots such as Cryptohopper, 3Commas, Coinrule, WunderTrading and HaasOnline's cloud plans run on the vendor's servers and trade through an API key you give them. You can move between exchanges, but the vendor stores your key. The 3Commas key leak of December 2022 shows what can go wrong.
Self-hosted bots such as Gunbot and HaasOnline's TradeServer run on your own computer or VPS, so the key never leaves your machine. In exchange you handle updates, uptime and the security of that machine. If it goes offline, the bot stops.
Exchange custody risk and proof of reserves
Whatever bot you use, your coins sit on an exchange while it trades. If the exchange fails or is hacked, the bot cannot protect them. When FTX collapsed in November 2022, customers' withdrawals were frozen and the case went to bankruptcy court. In February 2025 about $1.5 billion was stolen from Bybit, which the FBI attributed to North Korean hackers.
Proof of reserves lets you check that your balance is included in the total an exchange says it holds. Binance uses Merkle trees and zk-SNARKs; Bybit publishes monthly Merkle tree reports reviewed by Hacken. It is a snapshot of assets against customer balances on one date. It is not a full audit and does not show debts the exchange owes elsewhere.
Keep only the bot's trading capital on the exchange and move profits to your own wallet
Check the exchange's latest proof-of-reserves report and verify your own balance in it
Spread large balances across more than one exchange
Prefer an exchange licensed where you live, such as a US money transmitter or state trust charter
What each API key permission allows
Exchanges split API access into a few permissions, and the names differ. A cloud or self-hosted bot needs to read balances and place orders. It never needs to move money off the exchange, so any permission with withdraw or transfer in its name should stay off.
Futures bots also need futures or derivatives trading turned on for the key. Turn that on only if you plan to trade futures, because it lets the key open leveraged positions.

Which crypto bots work in the US

Tax on frequent bot trades
In the US, the IRS treats crypto as property. Under its guidance, selling crypto or swapping one coin for another is a taxable disposal, so every filled sell order or coin-to-coin trade your bot makes is a gain or loss to report. A grid bot that completes 500 trades in a year can mean 500 lines on Form 8949. Most of these gains will be short-term and taxed at ordinary income rates.
Exchanges now report sales to the IRS on Form 1099-DA, starting with 2025 transactions. Export the full trade history from every exchange the bot used, including closed accounts, and use crypto tax software that can import it. In the UK, HMRC also treats each crypto-to-crypto trade as a disposal for Capital Gains Tax. This is general information, not tax advice.
A bot that trades stablecoin pairs still triggers a disposal on every sell
Trading and funding fees affect your cost basis, so keep the fee records
Futures profits and losses may be taxed differently from spot trades
Download trade histories before you close an exchange account

Frequently asked questions
What is the best crypto trading bot?
For most people, a free bot built into a large exchange: Pionex outside the US or Pionex US inside it, or Binance's bots outside the US. You avoid a subscription and a third-party API key. If you want one bot across several exchanges, Cryptohopper, 3Commas and WunderTrading connect through API keys, and Gunbot runs on your own computer.
Are exchange trading bots really free?
The bot costs nothing extra on Pionex, Binance and Bybit, but every order pays the trading fee. A grid bot can trade hundreds of times a month, so 0.1% a trade on Binance or Bybit, or 0.05% on Pionex, adds up. Futures bots also pay or receive funding.
Can I use Binance or Bybit bots in the US?
No. Both exclude US residents, and using a VPN to get around this breaks their terms and can get an account frozen. In the US, use Pionex US or connect a third-party bot such as Cryptohopper, 3Commas, Coinrule or Gunbot to an exchange that serves you, such as Coinbase or Kraken.
Do I pay tax on every bot trade?
In the US, generally yes. The IRS treats crypto as property, so each sale or coin-to-coin swap is a taxable disposal with its own gain or loss. A busy bot can create hundreds of reportable trades a year. Keep full trade exports and consider crypto tax software.
Is a self-hosted bot safer than a cloud bot?
It removes one risk: the vendor cannot leak a key it never stores. It adds others: you have to keep the computer or VPS secure, patched and online. A self-hosted bot on a compromised laptop is less safe than a cloud bot with a trade-only, IP-restricted key.
What happens to my bot if the exchange is hacked?
The bot cannot protect funds held on the exchange, and whether you are repaid depends on the exchange's own reserves. FTX customers had withdrawals frozen when it collapsed in 2022. Keep only the bot's working capital on any exchange and stop the bot if the exchange pauses withdrawals.
Do grid bots work in a falling market?
A spot grid keeps buying as price falls through its range, so you end up holding more of a falling coin. Below the range it stops trading until price comes back. A short or neutral futures grid can trade a downtrend, but adds liquidation risk.
Which crypto bot platforms have had security or legal problems?
3Commas confirmed in December 2022 that leaked user API keys came from its systems. Cryptohopper disclosed a data breach of names and emails in June 2022. Bybit lost about $1.5 billion to hackers in February 2025. Binance pleaded guilty to US anti-money laundering violations in 2023.
