Futures prop firms vs forex prop firms

Futures prop firms trade exchange-listed contracts on CME Group markets: E-mini and Micro index futures, crude oil, gold, Treasuries and grains. Forex prop firms trade CFDs on MetaTrader or cTrader. Futures firms usually size accounts in contracts, not lots, and most require you to be flat before the daily close.

Futures firms also price differently. Many charge a monthly subscription or a one-time fee plus an activation fee, and most use a trailing drawdown rather than the fixed 10% maximum loss common at forex firms.

DrawdownUsually trailing, EOD or intradayOften fixed from the starting balance
HoldingUsually flat by the daily closeOvernight often allowed

End-of-day vs intraday trailing drawdown

Both move your loss limit up as your account makes new highs, and neither moves it down. The difference is when the high is measured.

An end-of-day (EOD) drawdown uses your closing balance. If you are up $1,500 at noon and close up $500, the limit moves up by $500. An intraday trailing drawdown uses your highest balance during the session, open profit included, so the same day moves the limit up $1,500 even though you kept only $500.

In both cases the limit is enforced in real time: touch it at any moment and the account fails. Most firms stop trailing once the limit reaches the starting balance, often plus $100. Topstep, Tradeify, Lucid and Alpha Futures use EOD on every plan. Apex and MyFundedFutures offer both, and Take Profit Trader's PRO account trails intraday.

The total cost of a subscription evaluation

A low monthly price can cost more than a one-time fee if you take a few months to pass. Add the monthly fee for every month you expect to need, then add any activation fee and resets.

Examples from list prices on 25 Oct 2026, for a $50K account passed in the third month:

  • Topstep Standard: 3 x $49 + $149 activation = $296
  • Topstep No Activation Fee: 3 x $95 = $285
  • Take Profit Trader: 3 x $170 + $130 PRO fee = $640
  • Alpha Futures Standard: 3 x $129 = $387
  • MyFundedFutures Builder, one time: $153
  • Tradeify Growth, one time: $145

Payout rules to check before you buy

The profit split matters less than the conditions around it. Look for:

  • A buffer or safety net you must build before the first payout
  • A minimum number of winning days, and the minimum profit that counts as a winning day
  • A consistency rule that limits how much of your profit can come from one day
  • A cap per payout, and a limit on how many payouts one account can take
  • Whether the loss limit moves after a payout

CME market data fees

CME charges for real-time data, and firms handle it differently. Most include non-professional Level 1 data in the price. Topstep includes Level 1 and charges $38 a month for Level 2 depth of market. Tradeify includes non-professional data but warns that if you do not sign the non-professional agreement on Tradovate you may pay a $300 a month professional fee.

Professional data fees can also apply once you reach a live account. Topstep says Live Funded traders pay professional data fees.

  • Sign the non-professional data agreement on your first platform login
  • Check whether Level 2 and EUREX data cost extra
  • Ask what data costs once you move to a live account
