Risk warning: Trading forex, futures and crypto carries a high risk of loss and is not suitable for every investor. Leverage can work against you as fast as it works for you. Only trade money you can afford to lose.
Trading bots compared on what you can check before connecting any money: the price, whether there is a free plan, who holds your funds, what the API key can do, and whether the vendor makes profit promises. Most "AI" bots run rules you set; we say which ones do more.
We may earn a commission when you join a provider through links on this page. It never changes the ranking. How we make money
A crypto exchange with grid, DCA, rebalancing and other bots built in, so there is no API key to hand to a third party. The global site charges 0.05% per spot trade and 0.02% maker or 0.05% taker on futures, with no bot subscription. Its terms exclude US residents; US users get a separate platform run by Pionex Inc., a licensed money transmitter that was fined $20,000 by North Carolina and Ohio in 2025 for operating there before it was licensed.

AI trading platforms regulators have warned about
These names are pushed with fake celebrity endorsements and promise automatic profits. Financial regulators have published warnings about each one. None of them is on our list, and we never link to them.
Most products sold as AI trading bots run fixed rules that you choose. A grid bot places a ladder of buy and sell orders inside a price range and profits only while price moves back and forth within it. A DCA bot buys in steps as price falls and sells at a set target. A signal bot opens and closes trades when an outside alert fires, often from TradingView. None of these learns anything on its own.
Where machine learning does appear, it usually helps choose settings or strategies rather than trade by itself. Trade Ideas picks strategies overnight from backtests, Composer and TrendSpider use AI to draft or analyze a strategy you then review, and Cryptohopper sells AI strategies on its top plan. Pionex's own terms say its bots act only within the parameters the user sets and exercise no discretion.
Grid bot: profits in sideways markets, suffers in strong trends
DCA bot: averages down, which can tie up most of your balance in a falling market
Signal bot: only as good as the signals it follows
AI or ML features: usually strategy selection or a writing assistant, not a self-trading brain
Why "guaranteed returns" bots are scams
No bot can guarantee a profit, because no software can predict prices. The CFTC's customer advisory "AI Won't Turn Trading Bots into Money Machines" warns that fraudsters use AI hype to sell bots and signal services that promise guaranteed or very high returns, and names 100% win rates as a red flag. It cites Mirror Trading International, which promised at least 10% a month and, per the CFTC, took about $1.7 billion in bitcoin from at least 23,000 people.
The UK FCA keeps a warning list of unauthorised firms, which includes AI bot sites such as "Ai Trader Bot" (added 6 June 2025). Dealing with a firm on that list means no Financial Ombudsman or FSCS protection. Check any bot that takes your deposit, rather than connecting to your own account, against the FCA register or the CFTC and NFA records first.
A fixed daily or monthly return, or a "guaranteed" profit
You must send money to the bot company instead of connecting your own exchange or broker
Win rates of 90% or more, or screenshots with no verified account
Celebrity or news-style endorsements, or a stranger who contacted you first
Withdrawals that need a fee, a tax payment or a minimum balance first
API key safety
Third-party bots such as 3Commas, Cryptohopper, Coinrule and WunderTrading connect to your exchange with an API key. The key stays usable for as long as it exists, so whoever holds it can trade your account. In December 2022 the 3Commas CEO confirmed that a set of user API keys posted online had come from 3Commas, after users reported unauthorized trades. Exchanges were asked to revoke all keys linked to the service.
A built-in exchange bot like Pionex avoids a third-party key, but then your coins sit on that exchange, which is its own risk. Either way, limit what a key can do.
Turn withdrawals off on every bot API key
Restrict the key to the bot's IP addresses when the exchange allows it
Use a separate exchange sub-account holding only what the bot trades
Delete keys you no longer use, and rotate keys after any reported incident
Turn on two-factor authentication on both the bot and the exchange
Free vs paid trading bots
Free plans are real but limited. Pionex charges nothing for its bots and earns from trading fees; Coinrule, WunderTrading and Composer have free tiers with one or a few live strategies. Paid plans add more bots, faster checks, futures, backtesting depth or AI features.
Total cost is the subscription plus trading fees, spreads and any data fees. A grid bot that trades hundreds of times a month can pay more in fees than the subscription.

Backtests and overfitting
A backtest replays a strategy over past prices. It is useful for finding rules that clearly do not work, but a good backtest is weak evidence that a rule will work in the future. The more settings you tune to fit the past, the more likely the result is a fit to noise. This is called overfitting.
Treat any vendor's backtest chart as an advertisement. Run your own, include fees and slippage, then paper trade or use a small amount before scaling up.
Test on a period you did not use to choose the settings
Include trading fees, spreads and funding costs
Check the worst drawdown, not only the total return
Be wary of strategies with many finely tuned parameters
Paper trade for several weeks before going live
How we rank AI trading bots
Every bot is scored on the same weighted areas, using what it publishes on its own site and channels. Facts are dated when we check them.

Frequently asked questions
Do AI trading bots really work?
A bot executes a strategy faster and more consistently than a person, but it does not make a losing strategy profitable. None of the products in this list publishes a third-party verified record of user returns. Grid and DCA bots do well in some markets and lose in others.
Are trading bots legal?
Yes. Using software to place trades in your own account is legal in the US and UK, and most exchanges and brokers allow it through their APIs. What is illegal is a firm taking deposits or managing money without the required registration, which is common in bot scams.
Is there a free AI trading bot?
Yes. Pionex's built-in bots are free apart from trading fees, and Coinrule, WunderTrading and Composer have free plans with limited live strategies. Any "free" bot that asks you to deposit money with it and promises a return should be treated as a likely scam.
What is the best AI trading bot for beginners?
Start with something you can understand and test for free: Pionex's grid bot or a Coinrule template on a small balance, or Composer's free plan for stocks. Paper trade first and keep the amount small until you have seen the bot through a losing stretch.
Can a bot trade forex or gold?
Most crypto bots here trade only crypto, though some exchanges list gold-backed tokens such as XAUT. Forex and gold bots usually run as Expert Advisors on MetaTrader at a forex broker, or through TrendSpider routing to a supported broker. Many forex "AI robots" sold online are on regulator warning lists.
Are trading bots safe?
The main risks are losing money on the strategy, a leaked API key and the failure of the exchange holding your funds. Disable withdrawals on every API key, keep only the bot's capital on the exchange, and prefer a regulated broker or a licensed exchange where possible.
Can I use these bots in the US?
Composer, Trade Ideas and TrendSpider are US stock tools. Pionex's global site excludes US residents, but its US platform says it is available in 47 states. 3Commas, Cryptohopper and Coinrule connect to US exchanges such as Coinbase and Kraken. Check the exchange you connect accepts you.
How much money do I need to start?
Pionex advertises its futures grid bots from 10 USDT, and most stock tools work with a small brokerage balance. Fees take a bigger share of small accounts, so check what each trade costs before deciding a bot is worth running.
